#10: “Town City Council”

 

              Task#10: Students will participate in a town meeting for

                          Naperville. They will be split up into three groups and

                          will debate an issue that has come to the public’s

                          attention.

 

Standard: Students will be able to:

· Communicate effectively in oral expression.

· Recognize and name diverse landforms and bodies of

     water.

 

Process:

 

1. Students will be assigned to work cooperatively in one of the

    following three groups: Town Council, Public for the issue or

    Public against the issue.

2. Students will review the rules and expectations of a debate by

    creating a T-Chart on the board of “What is looks like”/ “What it

    sounds like.”

3. The teacher will announce of issue to the class. The issue that

    comes to Naperville is that the Chicago Cubs would like to build

    a new stadium in downtown Naperville. This means that many

    houses and stores in the area will be knocked down to make

    room for the stadium and parking areas.

4. Students will be assigned their groups and have about 25

    minutes to come up with arguments for the issue.

5. Next the teacher will listen to each group’s discussion during

    that 25 minutes.

6. When all the groups are done the debate will begin.

7. As the debate is being held the teacher will keep track of who

    is speaking and making realistic comments.

8. When the debate is over the students will reflect in their

    journals about the debate and the issue.

 

Criteria:

· All students should participate in debate

· Comments should be realistic and pertain to real life in

     Naperville

· Journal entries should include:

· Complete sentences in a paragraph format
