#5: “Journey Through Naperville” Task#5: Students will discover their community of Naperville on a trolley field trip through downtown Naperville and Naper Settlement. Standard: Students will be able to: · Identify important components of a community. · Compare / Contrast how communities are similar and different from one another. · Communicate effectively in oral expression. · Communicate effectively in written expression. · Organize their information in a variety of ways. Process: 1. Students will travel into downtown Naperville on a trolley that will drop the students off at Naper Settlement. 2. At Naper Settlement students will go on a tour of Naperville that begins long ago and demonstrates how Naperville developed into the community it is today. 3. After Naper Settlement the students will board the trolley and be dropped off at the Riverwalk and downtown area where they will be given a disposable camera to take pictures of interesting and important sites in Naperville. Students will be told to take no more than 15 pictures and they must be of sites, etc. Stu- dents will be grouped into groups of 5 with one adult per group. They will have about one hour to explore the downtown area. 4. Upon arrival back at school students will share their information in a small discussion. For homework over the weekend the students need to take their cameras home and finish the roll of film with other interesting sites in Naperville, public amenities or neighborhood facilities. 5. On Monday the teacher will collect the film and have it developed for the students. 6. When the film has been developed the students will look at the pictures and choose their favorite spot in Naperville. They will use this picture and write an expository paragraph about this location. 7. Students will hand in their paragraphs and pictures to make into a class book entitled “Our Community of Naperville.” The book will be sent home with each student for parents to view. |
